At the recent Collaborate conference in Orlando, Oracle President Charles Phillips announced that the company has waived Extended Support fees for several Oracle major product lines through 2010 and 2011. Read details from Oracle’s official press release here. Mary Hayes Weir from Information Week gives her detailed analysis of this news where she concludes “This announcement shows Oracle making sacrifices on profitability, too. For every $1 million software license on the above products purchased in 2005, it will get about $22,000 less in maintenance fees next year. However, large software vendors such as Oracle and SAP are unlikely to make major changes to their software license and maintenance strategies unless customers start moving in droves to alternative approaches, including modern hosted software approaches such as software as a service.”
